Watch the tutorial before your lesson, then discuss anything you find confusing with your instructor. Pause the video to think about what information you would look for before deciding where to position the car.

This is an older recording. Road layouts, markings and signals may have changed since filming. Follow the signs and conditions you encounter on the day rather than relying on a remembered lane or exit.

Why Can This Area Feel Challenging?

When you are concentrating on traffic lights, lane markings and your destination at the same time, it can feel as though everything is happening at once. Breaking the approach into manageable decisions makes it easier to understand what needs your attention.

Use your lesson to identify which part feels difficult. Is it reading the signs early enough, following your lane, or deciding when to move? A specific question gives you and your instructor something useful to work on.

Plan Your Approach Early

Read the direction signs and lane arrows in good time. Choose your lane for your intended direction and adjust your speed to the traffic and visibility. Avoid copying the vehicle ahead without checking where your own lane leads.

Follow the Signals for Your Lane

Identify the signal controlling your movement and obey the stop line. A green light means you may proceed if the way is clear; it does not mean you should follow the queue into a blocked junction.

Follow the Lane Markings

Keep track of your lane as it curves. Where markings guide you towards an exit, follow them. If you need to change lanes, check your mirrors and the relevant blind spot, signal as appropriate and move only when safe.

Leave Room for Other Road Users

Allow space around larger vehicles and watch for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. Keep checking the developing situation instead of concentrating only on the car directly ahead.

These general principles follow The Highway Code’s guidance on junctions and roundabouts.

Gary’s Practice Tip

Watch a short section of the video, pause it and explain your plan aloud: “Where am I going? What information can I see? What do I need to check next?” Discuss your answer with your instructor before practising.

What If You Find Yourself in the Wrong Lane?

Avoid making a sudden correction just to reach your intended exit. Follow a safe, legal route and let your instructor help you recover during lessons. Practise this situation too: dealing calmly with a navigation mistake is a useful driving skill.

Preparing for Your West Didsbury Driving Test

Treat this tutorial as local preparation, not a prediction of your test route. The aim is to develop skills you can use at unfamiliar junctions as well as places you have practised.

After a lesson, identify one thing that improved and one thing to revisit. If you already have test feedback, use it to make that practice more focused. Read our driving test report guide.
